9th pauri of Japji: How to read a book of life?

There is a book of life and you can learn to read it by deep listening. This book of life has never been written down, nor has it been kept secret by anyone. This book of life is open to anyone willing to learn.

We can do this application of our knowledge because all energies that are working in the universe are also working through and in our bodies.

Speaking of forces of the universe, Guru Nanak and Hindu philosophy recognize 3 basic forces that work within all creation.

Generating (creating) Brahma,

Organizing or sustaining (preserver) Vishnu

and Destroying (Shiva).

Life and as we see it is the motion or shall we say a dance between these 3 qualities. The balance is only one.

Life is a change that happens between these 3 states of creation, sustenance, and destruction.

Even the base of our material life, the atom has 3 basic particles (electrons, protons and neutrons) and the interaction between them creates our reality.

Our bodies, have 3 most important pranic channels that give us life and breath. Ida, pingala and shushmuna. These channels are constantly interacting and feeding off of one another. Once they stop this little dance of polarities, life stops and the soul leaves the body.

Yoga means union which means an ability to balance these 3 gunas to the point of being able to live our dharma fully.

caduceus symbol expresses the interaction between these three channels beautifully.

The two snakes are dynamically positioned against one another, working off each other and in the center is the staff that holds the main current of kundalini energy.

Guru Nanak in this short pauri mentions that through deep listening, you will understand all sacred scriptures. Because all sacred scriptures describe one truth.  The understanding is already within you because you are part of this creation.

How do I practice deep listening?

Deep listening can be done in many different ways but mainly it means to meditate, to be alone with your thoughts and with your emotions. To be able to observe yourself and life around you without getting invested in the polarities of life. Just like shushmuna channel is resting in the center of the movement of ida and pingala, so your awareness can be trained to be like an eye of the storm, watching the play of the universe.

When you learn to deeply listen, God happily opens the book of all sacred knowledge to you.

It’s beautiful.
